ADDRESSING LOCAL DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE
A big THANK YOU to everyone who attended our Rotary 4 Mental Health (R4MH) meeting on 18 April in the Cooroy Memorial Hall.
Keynote speaker, Ryan Hanlon, Senior Sergeant Noosa Police and Officer in Charge at Eumundi, Senior Sergeant Brian McKenzie Acting OIC Cooroy, and Sergeant Maria O’Brien from the specialist DV unit in Maroochydore outlined the scale of our local problem, the tools Police and community members may use to assist addressing this serious issue across our part of the Sunshine Coast.
Up to 1 in 4 women have experience of family violence and the urgent need to apply prevention activities as there is a period of heightened risk after the first instance of victimisation. Prevention activities focus on people already victimised who have a higher likelihood of being re-victimised.
Organised by R4MH (Rotarians for Mental Health – 5 Local Rotary Clubs Cooroy, Eumundi, Noosa, Noosa Daybreak and Noosa Heads) encouraging people touched by mental health issues to reach out, speak up and seek assistance.
Meeting weekly here in Cooroy with like-minded people, Rotarians have the expertise and contacts to make things happen. We are supporting local charities, helping to eradicate polio worldwide, we’re providing disaster relief, improving youth opportunities locally and globally, and having a great time doing so.
